~History of Potholes ~ Do you know where the term "pothole" comes from?? Apparently, in 17th Century England, the pottery district was known for its rich, clay soil. Potters, wanting this rich soil, but not wanting to work harder than they had to, would sneak out to the established roadways in the middle of the night and dig holes out of the roads...thus it's name, "pot hole" -- a hole in the road for the pot! Unfortunately, their "potholes" made the roads dangerous, and the practice was eventually forbidden.

Toffee Delight Muffins from Miss Spenser's Teatime Recipes Cookbook Vol. 2 Ingredients: 2 C Flour 1 C Sugar 1 C Water 4 Eggs 1 small pkg. Instant Vanilla Pudding 1 small pkg. Instant Butterscotch Pudding 2 tsp. Baking Powder 1 tsp. Salt 3/4 C Vegetable Oil 1 tsp. Vanilla Topping: 1 C Brown Sugar 3/4 C Pecans, chopped 1 tsp. Cinnamon Mix together all, except the topping ingredients. Beat 2 minutes. Using half of the batter, pour and fill each muffin cup 1/3 full. Mix together topping. Sprinkle 1/2 of topping on muffins. Add remaining batter to fill each muffin 2/3 full, then top muffins with remaining topping mixture. Bake 15-18 minutes at 350 degrees. Makes 24 muffins.

Unlike other birds that fly south to avoid the bitter chill of winter, the hearty and cheerful little chickadee remains, chirping merrily through snow, ice, wind and rain. According to E.B. White, the Black-capped Chickadee: "Was put on earth to demonstrate the power of positive thinking. No day is dark, no night is cold, no hour is evil, no harm is in sight, no news is bad. An acrobat and an optimist, the Chickadee is perfectly named (he named himself), perfectly designed. We should all wear a black cap, ignore weather reports, and make friends easily." One can't help but smile when you see these friendly faces hopping in the snow!

Here in Iowa, we are thawing out today! Thankfully, we did not lose electricity like we did a couple of years ago; however, we did manage to lose our internet services for a whole day and a half...for us "addicted" internet-dependent junkies, this was very traumatic!! The upside about the down time is that we did manage to get rid of a few dust bunnies around here!
